When you arrive in the Labor & Delivery department, you will either be taken directly to a private labor suite or to a private triage room where you will be evaluated by an RN who will work with you and your physician to develop your plan of care.

Family members and friends are welcome between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Two waiting rooms are available when
they aren’t in your room with you. Your significant other is always welcome.

Whether you prefer a “natural” approach to childbirth (we have birthing balls, showers, and glider rocking chairs and doulas are welcome), or epidural pain relief (anesthesia staff are available 24-hours a day), Labor & Delivery staff are prepared to support your choices.

Babies generally remain in the room with their mother for the first one to two hours of life before going to the nursery for their bath. Breastfeeding before the baby goes to the nursery is recommended. Support is provided by certified lactation nurses.

After delivery, you will remain in your room for recovery for about one and a half hours. Then you’ll be moved to a postpartum room closer to the nursery where a team of specialized nurses will provide attentive, personalized care for you and your baby.

St. John's has a multi-level security process that includes computer-aided infant monitoring using and a high-resolution surveillance system.

Most mothers go home two days after a routine birth and three days after a surgical birth. Of course, the length of your stay depends upon your physician’s recommendations and your insurance company’s guidelines. Nursing staff teach families about feeding, bathing, diapering, cord care, car safety, and infant CPR techniques.

We recognize and respect cultural/religious differences. We will include those concerns and practices into your plan of care. Interpreters are available for many languages.
