Breastfeeding Services

St. John’s offers both inpatient and outpatient breastfeeding services, including classes and individual consultations to assist you and your family. These services are available to every new mother and are free for Teddy Bear Club members.

Teddy Bear Club Classes

Breastfeeding I: Getting Started

This class covers basic breastfeeding information, such as the advantages of breastfeeding, breast preparation, feeding techniques and positioning options for mother and baby. Fathers or other support persons are encouraged to attend.

Breastfeeding II: Learning More

Techniques are reviewed and information is provided on breast pumps, collecting and storing milk, breastfeeding after you’ve returned to work, making babysitting plans, and weaning preparation.

St. John’s Mother & Baby Support Center

St. John’s Mother and Baby Support Center offers assistance to moms and babies with breastfeeding before delivery and after leaving the hospital. The center is located at 3328 S. National and is part of St. John’s Medical Supply. A Certified Lactation Consultant is available by appointment Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mothers who deliver at St. John’s receive free breastfeeding and bra fitting consultations. Services

¢ Prenatal exams to assess flat/inverted nipples.

¢ Certified bra fittings for breast-feeding and bottle-feeding mothers.  

¢ Customized pump fittings and “back to work” consultations.

¢ Outpatient consultations for high-risk newborns or latch-on difficulties, or women who have had breast surgery and wish to breastfeed.

¢ Baby weight checks before and after nursing to measure the exact amount of intake.

¢ Phone follow-ups 48 hours, two weeks, and six months after delivery.

¢ Workplace consultations to assist with providing the employee with a breastfeeding/pumping room.

¢ St. John’s Community Health Library breastfeeding resources (books/videos to check out).

¢ Discounted breastfeeding supplies and pumps available with Teddy Bear Club membership.

Inpatient Care

While mothers and babies are in the hospital, lactation specialists are available during your stay to assist new mothers with breastfeeding. If you would like assistance with breastfeeding your baby, please let your nurse know.

Newborn Intensive Care

Mothers with babies in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can use a special breastfeeding room equipped with electric breast pumps. This comfortable room offers a quiet place for babies and their families. Schedule an appointment with the Inpatient Lactation staff if you’d like assistance with learning how to breastfeed your baby. At discharge of your baby, schedule follow up appointments with your pediatrician or the Mother & Baby Support Center until your baby is nursing well. Call the Mother & Baby Support Center for breast pumping or milk supply questions.
