St. John's Foundation to Host Area Childhood Obesity
Conference

St. John's Foundation for
Community Health will host a conference and panel discussion on childhood
obesity 8 a.m. - noon, May 19, 2005 at St. John's Hammons Heart Institute. The
conference is designed to raise awareness and promote community strategies to
address the issue.
Experts will provide best practice models, recent statistics and funding
opportunities to individuals and organizations interested in collaborative
solutions to reduce the incidence of obesity. The event features keynote
speaker, Susie Nanney, Ph.D., MPH, R.D. and additional speakers and panelists
from local government, Missouri Foundation for Health, Springfield-Greene County
Health Department, Springfield-Greene County Park Board, Springfield Public
Schools and St. John's Health System.
Dr. Nanney, assistant professor and acting director of the Obesity Prevention
Center at St. Louis University School of Public Health, will discuss childhood
obesity and community-based obesity prevention. Her extensive experience
includes managing large community based studies funded by the National Cancer
Institute and American Cancer Society as well as work as a registered dietician
with master's degrees in both Community Health Nutrition and Public Health.
Other featured presentations include comments from Mayor Tom Carlson, results of
a recent Springfield-Greene County Community Health Assessment, local best
practices and summary of current programs to address obesity and a
multi-discipline panel discussion.
