Michele Schaefer joins St. John’s Health System

Michele M. Schaefer has joined St. John’s as St. John’s Health System Senior Vice President and St. John’s Hospital Chief Operating Officer effective Sept. 26, 2005. She replaces Jon Swope, who became President and Chief Executive Officer of Mercy Health System of Kansas.

Michele has spent the last 18 years of her career working in Catholic health care. She most recently served as Chief Executive Officer at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Kansas City for the past seven years.

Prior to joining St. Joseph’s, she served for six years as Chief Operating Officer at St. Mary’s Hospital in Blue Springs, Mo. She has also led operations in various capacities at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis and at Spelman Memorial Hospital in Smithville, Mo.

Michele completed a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Bachelor of Health Administration at Wichita State University in Wichita Kan. and a Masters in Health Administration at University of Missouri - Columbia. She completed her Master’s residency at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis.

Michele’s husband Jim retired from the Missouri Department of Mental Health after 30 years of service. The couple has two children who are currently studying at University of Missouri - Columbia: a son who is a Pre-Med senior and a daughter who is a junior business major.
