St. John's Libraries

Library Cards

St. John's Libraries issue two types of library cards. One card is issued to St. John's affiliated physicians and coworkers, the other is issued to patients and community residents. Select from the links below for more information about each library card.

St. John's Coworkers Community Residents

St. John's Co-Workers

St. John's affiliated physicians and coworkers may register to obtain a library card that will give privileges to check out materials from both the Medical Library and the Community Health Library. Coworkers must present their ID badge to borrow materials.

There are two ways to register for a library card:

  • Complete online registration -
Visit the main page of our online catalog, Coolcat, select St. John's Coworker from the options on the left side of the page and fill out the required information.  Once submitted, you will be provided with a temporary library card number you can use to immediately place items on hold. Visit either library to complete your registration and obtain your library card.
  • Print and complete a library card application -
Fax or interoffice mail your completed application.
Medical Library fax number, 417-820-5399 ; Interoffice mail to Medical Library - Springfield
Community Health Library fax number, 417-820-8761 ; Interoffice mail to Library - O'Reilly Cancer Center

Your coworker library card gives you the ability to monitor your library check-out history, renew materials, and place holds on materials. Read more information about these options. A library card is not required to place an information search request.

Community Residents

Patients, family members and community residents, age 18 and over, may register for a library card that will give privileges to check out books and audiovisual materials from the Community Health Library. Library cards are issued free of charge. Patrons must provide a photo ID and proof of address to be issued a library card. There are no residency requirements.

Access your library card account
Renew titles, check due dates, check the status of holds, view a reading history, and more. Access your library card account now.

Renewing items
Access your library card account
and select the "Number of Items Currently Checked Out" link. If the link does not appear, you do not have any items checked out. Select the titles you wish to renew and select "Renew Selected Titles" or "Renew All Titles". Items successfully renewed will show a status of "Renewed". Items that could not be renewed will show a status explaining why the item could not be renewed. Note the new due date of your items, you will not receive a notice from the library.

Place a hold on an item

Search COOLcat, the library's online catalog, for the title you are interested in. Once you locate a title and are viewing the detailed record, click on the "Place a Hold" button located at the top of the screen. You will then be prompted to enter your name and library card barcode (or temporary card number if you just registered online) located on the back of your library card.

Cancel a hold on an item
Access your library card account
and select the "Number of Requests (Holds) Outstanding" link. Select the titles you wish to cancel and select, "Cancel Selected Holds". If you mistakenly cancel a hold you will need to re-place the hold, the library cannot reset holds once they have been canceled.

View your reading history
This option allows you to keep a list of the materials you have checked out from the library. Access your library card account. Select the "My Reading History" link. You can then choose to keep your reading history or delete titles from your reading history. The reading history option is the only way patrons have of keeping track of library materials they have checked out. The library does not maintain a list of items checked out by individual patrons.
