St. John's Clinic donates $50,000 to The Kitchen

St. John's Clinic representatives presented a $50,000 check to The Kitchen Dec. 7, 2004, at The Kitchen's Community Outreach Center, 420 E. Blaine. This is the second year in a row St. John's Clinic has contributed substantially to The Kitchen, which provides shelter and other services for the needy.
The Clinic's "Home For The Holidays" project money helped approximately 400 underprivileged families provide rent, utilities and winter necessities so they could remain in their own homes for the holidays, according to Barbara Morgan, The Kitchen's spokeswoman.
St. John's Clinic co-workers and departments were encouraged to raise money in their own areas, many of which did through bake sales, fund-raising luncheons and drawings. Those raising $120 or more were designated as Holiday Homebuilders.
"As the leading Clinic in the region, we believe we have an opportunity and, in fact, an obligation to care for the needy in our community," says Donn Sorensen, St. John's Clinic senior vice president and chief operating officer. "We were proud to help make a difference for families of The Kitchen during the holiday season."
The Force for Good committee is led by St. John's Clinic physicians and co-workers is a part of St. John's Foundation for Community Health. The foundation also contributed to the Holiday Homebuilders campaign.
The Force for Good's most recent endeavor was the "Clothe a Kid" campaign, which raised more than $40,000 through St. John's Clinic offices for the Springfield PTA's clothing bank - fully funding the estimated 1,200 Springfield Public Schools students in need. Physicians and clinics in the Rolla area recently donated nearly $5,000 for basic apparel necessities for approximately 138 children. In the last year, St. John's Clinic Force for Good has raised more than $100,000 for local charities.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Marines use the center for fitness activities and physical rehabilitation of those coming back from service in Iraq.

St. John's Sports Medicine teams with Park Board and Springfield Public Schools

The Springfield-Greene Park Board’s SPARC (Schools, Parks Are Reaching Communities) program announced plans for its new “Step Club – Schools on the Move” program.
The Step Club program is a partnership among Springfield Public Schools, the park board and St. John’s Sports Medicine, and funded with a generous grant from St. John’s Foundation for Community Health. Representatives from each organization are scheduled to speak, with attendees encouraged to participate along with students in the program immediately following.
Starting with seven initial sites, the eventual goal includes incorporating the program into the district’s more than 30 elementary schools. The initiative encourages students to walk 20-30 minutes twice each week in the mornings before class. The goal is to promote physical fitness and bring awareness to the childhood obesity rate, considering Missouri ranks 11th in the nation.
SPARC is a partnership between the Springfield-Greene County Park Board and Springfield Public Schools, promoting opportunities for youth and families through after-school and recreational enrichment, summer camps, special outings, and increased availability of joint school-park facilities.
“Everyone at SPARC is so pleased about the opportunity to partner on this new and exciting program,” said SPARC Coordinator Sandra Pratt. “Not only do participants learn about goal setting and receive incentives as they achieve different levels of the program, but the interaction with other students and family members in the mornings is a great way to show that exercising is fun.”
