Will I have to wear glasses or contacts afterwards?
Nearly all patients achieve legal driving vision and don't require glasses or contacts for good distance vision. Most patients achieve vision better than legal driving vision. Patients over age 40 will find that they will need reading glasses. St. John's eye surgeons require a complete exam, called the Measurements Exam, to find out if you are a good candidate. Your surgeon can give you a good idea about the results you may expect following the exam.
Is it safe?
Laser vision correction is a surgical procedure and with any surgical procedure, there is always an element of risk. During your Measurements Exam, your eye surgeon will counsel extensively with you about benefits and risks, especially those specific to you. Most people with healthy eyes and realistic expectations can be good candidates with every possibility of good results. If your tests show that having
a laser procedure is not in your best interest, St. John's eye surgeons will discourage you from having
a procedure.
Does it hurt?
You experience little to no discomfort during the procedure, and little to no discomfort afterwards. Your vision improves dramatically in 24 hours. You take home prescription eye drops to use for the short term, and receive written instructions with basic guidelines to follow for a short time.
Does the surgeon operate on both eyes the same day?
Yes, unless your surgeon feels that is not in your best interest.
If I am a candidate, when can I have my procedure?
We want to schedule you when it's convenient for you. Usually you will need to wait 4-7 days after your Measurements Exam because of the strong drops used during the exam. The eye surgeons have 2-3 afternoons per week reserved for
procedures.
