Stroke Measures

Consistent compliance of using
standard treatment protocols for these core measures has shown significant
reductions of the complications of stroke and a reduced risk of a recurrent
stroke, which is greatest in the subsequent three months. Using
stroke order
sets from St. John’s Internet incorporates the appropriate treatments for the
core measures and improves compliance, resulting in improved outcomes.

Cardiology Department updates

The year 2007 saw many updates to the Cardiology
department at St. John’s. The initiation and advancement of the patent foramen
ovale and atrial septal defect percutaneous closure program has helped several
patients who have suffered either paradoxical embolic stroke or hypoxia-inducing
intracardiac shunts.

Wise - Immunize!

The vaccine schedule
has become much more complicated than it once was. Children are receiving far
more shots than they ever did. Now, children could receive as many as 24 shots
by 2 years of age and five shots in a single visit. Some parents question the
importance and safety of vaccines and whether their child should receive so many
at one time.

Nutrition Center
offers variety of services

St. John’s
Nutrition Center is located at Hammons Heart Institute and is staffed by
registered, licensed dietitians. Physician referral is required for Medical
Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Individual MNT consultation with a dietitian is
provided for a variety of medical conditions for which dietary modification is
part of the treatment plan.

JVIC
provides opportunity for translational research for St. John's physicians

Thanks to a new partnership with Missouri State
University, St. John’s physicians now have the opportunity to research and
develop new medical technology. In May 2007 the Jordan Valley Innovation Center
(JVIC) opened in downtown Springfield.
