Aging in the New Millennium

Across the nation, we have been hearing more and
more about the rising healthcare costs and how the Medicare health system is in
jeopardy, not only because this is a presidential election year and healthcare
is an important political issue, but because it is a reality that will affect us
all. The health care crisis is partly attributed to “the graying of America.”
It is a fact that the elderly, as a whole, utilize health care more than most
other population segments.

Minimally
Invasive Heart Valve Surgeries

In the past two years, minimally
invasive approaches for valve surgery has been growing and maturing at St.
John’s hospital. The goal is to make heart valve surgery less invasive to the
patient and promote faster recovery and return to normal physical activities.
Under the expertise of Dr. Fon Huang, techniques have been adopted to reduce the
trauma and stress of valve surgery for our patients.

Deep
Brain Stimulation at St. John's

Since the spring of 2005, St.
John’s has offered deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a therapy for patients with
medically refractory Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor. DBS involves
high frequency, pulsatile electrical stimulation of the deep brain nuclei such
as the thalamus, globus pallidus or subthalamic nucleus that suppresses or
inhibits local neurons passing close to those areas.

Hysterectomy: A Minimally Invasive Option for Faster Recovery

Hysterectomy is the second most common
surgery performed for women, second only to cesarean section. Approximately
600,000 women undergo hysterectomy every year. Like many other types of
surgery, there are now newer, minimally invasive hysterectomy options to provide
patients with faster recovery, less pain and fewer complications.

misunderstood by patients and health care providers alike. Patients and
providers often seek out fast and easy solutions for chronic pain
conditions, and as one might expect easy solutions are often elusive, if
