 Stroke Studies


St. John's Stroke Center is certified as a Primary Stroke Center with The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Disease-Specific Care Certification program.  St. John's has become one of the leading sites in the U.S. that has met national quality standards for providing stroke care.  This confirms that St. John's Stroke Center is a leader in stroke treatment, prevention, education, and research.

Under the direction of Dr. Thomas Habiger, St. John's Hospital is involved in retrospective and acute stroke studies including:

  • Multiple dose infusions of an investigational drug to limit effects of acute ischemic stroke

  • Continuous infusion of an investigational drug to limit the effects of acute ischemic stroke

  • PRoFESS®, the Prevention Regimen For Effectively avoiding Second Strokes, compares the efficacy and safety of Aggrenox® (25 mg ASA/200 mg extended-release dipyridamole) with clopidogrel, and of Micardis® (telmisartan) with placebo in preventing recurrent stroke.  PRoFESS®, will involve 15,500 patients from approximately 600 sites throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America and South Africa, for an observation period of up to 4 years, is the largest-ever secondary stroke prevention trial sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim.
