Well-known for their unselfish community
generosity, Judge W. I. and Louise G. Wallace crowned their years of giving
with the donation of $20,000 at Mrs. Wallace’s death in 1929 for the
construction of a community hospital on the site of the Wallace Home in
Lebanon.
Five years
later, in 1934, with an additional $30,000 endowment from the Wallace
estate, the Louise G. Wallace Hospital opened with a crowd of nearly 700
celebrating the dedication of the 24-bed facility.
In the 1960s, Ernest and Thelma Rowden Breech donated generously to continue
to expand the health services provided by the Wallace Hospital. In 1963, the
Breeches donated nearly $300,000 to build an addition known as the Rowden
Hospital Center, in memory of Mrs. Breech’s parents.
Throughout the next 10 years, the Breech Foundation contributed more than $2
million to the hospital. In 1979, the name officially changed to Breech
Medical Center.
Another page turned in the history of the hospital in 1996 as the Breech
Medical Center joined the Sisters of Mercy and became St. John’s Hospital-Lebanon. Nearly 8,000 people attended the open house for the
new $20 million facility at 100 Hospital Drive in 1999.
The
state-of-the-art, 48-bed, 90,000 square-foot hospital was designed with a
focus on care and convenience for patients and families in and around
Laclede County. A 45,000 square-foot physician office is attached to the
hospital.
