Cardiologists

Cardiologists subspecialize in diseases of the heart, lungs and blood vessels and manage heart conditions such as heart attacks and life-threatening irregular heart rhythms.

If you have symptoms such as shortness of breath, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and/or a history of heart disease, you may be referred to a cardiologist. Cardiologists perform diagnostic procedures such as cardiac catheterization and consult with surgeons on heart surgery.

Cardiovascular/Thoracic Surgeons

Thoracic surgery encompasses the care of patients with conditions within the chest. If you have surgical needs for coronary artery disease, cancers of the lung or esophagus, abnormalities of the big vessels and heart valves, congenital abnormalities or diseases of the diaphragm, you may be referred to a cardiovascular/thoracic surgeon.

A vascular surgeon is a specialty-trained physician who performs surgery on blood vessels. Surgery can include: removing the plaque from an artery, bypassing the area of obstruction with a graft and performing endovascular procedures. Vascular surgeons also can be involved in the medical treatment of vascular disease.
