Achievements

St.
John’s EMS is proud to be a clinical leader in the state. Special areas to
note include:
¢ First system in the state to implement a 12
Lead (Multi-Lead) ECG
program that includes initial training of all
Paramedics, on-going
competency assessment, refresher training in
acquisition and
interpretation of data, thrombolytic checklist prescreening,
heparin and
aspirin administration. Our goal to expedite care for the
patient suffering
acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) has been quite
successful. The
time to intervention has been significantly reduced with
improved
outcomes. Our approach to 12-lead EKG and out-of-hospital cardiac
care
serves as a model for other services across the country.
¢ First service in the nation to trial
Troponin T rapid assay test for AMI. This
clinical trial established the
feasibility of paramedics drawing blood on
patients suspected of acute
myocardial infarction and completing a rapid
Troponin test while in
transport.
¢ First service in Missouri and one of the
first in the nation to administer
clot-busting drugs to AMI patients.
¢ Established quarterly competency program to
improve and assure quality
in common and seldom utilized skills and
knowledge.
¢ Established a First Responder Automatic
External Defibrillator pilot
program. This program facilitated passage of
legislation that has
increased utilization of AEDs statewide.
¢ Our service works with other departments in
the Health System to develop
clinical pathways to assure continuity of care
for patients. St. John’s
EMS is actively involved with the Acute Myocardial
Infarction Team,
Stroke Team, and the Trauma and Cardiovascular Services
committees.
¢ Maintain aggressive assessment-based
protocols that are updated on a
continuing basis.
¢ Achieved 96 percent customer satisfaction
rating of excellence as
reflected by Press Ganey surveys, which are
completed by patients and
family members.
¢
Quality Improvement Award for the State of Missouri (2003-2004).
¢
EMS System of the year for the State of Missouri (2000-2001).
